DIABETES Care and Diet

Healthy routine helps to minimize the risk of developing complications of diabetes. One can keep blood glucose levels normal by a healthy diet and maintaining physical fitness. Eating right, controlling your weight and exercising regularly will help you to control sugar level.

Excess consumption of alcohol is harmful as it may lower blood glucose levels and cause weight gain. Smoking is very harmful to diabetes patients, because it increases the risk of long-term complications. Foot care is important because diabetes can increase the risk of skin infections and ulcers on the feet. You must clean your feet daily and if a sore develop on your feet, consult the doctor promptly. Diabetes patients have an increased risk of high blood pressure, so regular monitoring is important.

Low-fat, vegetarian diets are ideal for diabetics. In most cases, diabetics can manage their disease much better with a food plan that gets most of its calories from complex carbohydrates while minimizing fats.

Diet for Diabetes :

With a near-vegetarian diet and exercise program, one can maintain their sugar levels with out taking any medications. Ideal diet program for a diabetic is a low fat vegetarian diet, reducing meats, high-fat dairy products, and oils. At the same time increasing grains, legumes, and vegetables.

  • Have your meals at regular timings and limit your overall intake.

  • Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Soluble fibers mainly found in fruits, vegetables and some seeds are good for diabetics. They reduce or slow down the absorption of glucose from the intestines.
Diabetes patients should include leafy vegetables, vegetable soups and juices in their diet. Vegetables like tomato, cucumber, bitter gourd, carrot, cooked kidney beans, pumpkin, snake gourd, beans, cabbage, lady finger, brinjal, onion, spinach, inner part of banana stem, drum sticks etc. are good for diabetes. Fruits and fruit juices of apple, guava, lemon etc. are good. Avoid fruits like banana, mango, grapes, papaya, jack fruit etc. and vegetables like potato, tapioca, sweet potato etc. containing lot of carbohydrates.

  • Eat more starches such as bread, cereal, and starchy vegetables. Aim for six servings a day or more.

  • Eat sugars, sweets and fat and fat-fried items in moderation.
It is better to avoid cakes, jaggery, honey, ghee, butter, cool drinks, biscuits, dried fruits like badam and excess use of oil while cooking.

AS I FEEL

As I face myself through teary eyes
I don’t recognize my reflection
A shadow of my former self
I see a fraud, a coward a sad soul
Too ashamed to seek guidance
And always thinking I’m not good enough.

As I stand alone unsure what to do
I hear a sweet whisper in my ear,
Saying “Stay strong, have faith
I will guide you and protect you”
As I turn around to catch a glimpse
I see brightness but was oh so brief,

There was a comfort in this whisper
My spirits lifted, soaring so high

As I lay down and close my eyes
I feel relaxed and calm,
I drifted off.

In my dream I awoke
There stood the angel that I hoped
Once again I hear a whisper
Saying “I’m here to give you hope
And stand by your side”

Did Inception leave you wanting to know more about dreams? Here are 10 facts about the universal phenomena:

1. SOME PEOPLE ARE COLOR BLIND IN THEIR DREAMS

DilSeDesiGroup

About 12% of people can only dream in black and white. Curiously, the majority of people in 1915 to the 1950s dreamed in black and white. Scientists suggest that this is because of the switch from black and white to color in television and films.

2. EVERYONE IN YOUR DREAM IS REAL

Thoughts from Man's heart

Thoughts from Man's heart

Thought 1

When we are born, our mothers get the compliments and the flowers.
When we are married, our brides get the presents and the publicity.
When we die, our widows get the life insurance.
What do women want to be liberated from?

Thought 2

The average man's life consists of:
Twenty years of having his mother ask him where he is going,
Forty years of having his wife ask the same question;
and at the end, the mourners wondering too where he is going.

Thought 3

Everyone in the wedding ceremony was watching the radiant bride as her father escorted her down the aisle to give away to the groom. They reached the altar and the waiting groom; the bride kissed her father and placed something in his hand. Everyone in the room was wondering what was given to the father by the bride.

The father could feel the suspense in the air and all eyes were on him to divulge the secret and say something. So he announced :

'Ladies and Gentlemen. Today is the luckiest day of my life ...' Then he raised his hands with what his daughter gave him and continued, 'My daughter finally, finally returned my Credit Card to me.'

The whole audience including the priest started laughing . . . . . But not the poor Groom ! ! !

And now the Best for the Last . . . .

Thought 4

A Man was walking down a street when he heard a voice from behind, 'If you take one more step, a brick will fall down on your head and kill you.'

The man stopped and a big brick fell right in front of him. The man was astonished. He went on, and after a while he was going to cross the road. Once again the voice shouted, 'Stop! Stand still! If you take one more step a car will run over you, and you will die.'

The man did as he was instructed, just as a car came careening around the corner, barely missing him.. The man asked. 'Who are you?'

'I am your guardian angel,' the voice answered.
'Oh, yeah?' the man said 'And where the hell were you when I got married?

Emotional Danger

Emotional Danger
photo
December 1, 2011
We have been warned of the dangers of smoking, and even second hand smoke. Emotional dangers? Not a danger much announced as such. There are some ‘yogi like people’ who seem to pride themselves in putting up barriers to avoid all emotions, good or challenging. Emotions, unlike cigarette smoke, have great life values, but also can be out of control for one’s own good. It is said ‘everything in moderation’, but ‘moderation’, minimizing, or excessive when it comes to emotions is a complex road to travel. ‘Moderation’ is safe, especially for one who ‘over reacts’ to the point of causing any discomfort for oneself, or others. On the other end for those who repress emotions, opening to a moderation or balance is a healthy necessity.

Each human being is a complex organism of thinking and feeling, while the unconscious or consciousness may create barriers to those two phenomenon. Some have fallen into what they perceive as a way to handle life by denying thinking, over thinking or feeling, even when life changing occurrences appear. Difficulties occur when one blocks both thinking and feeling, or exists by blocking most feeling by manipulating their thoughts to deal with or bypass what their undeveloped emotions can’t handle. Life needs both thinking, by using common sense or the discernment of the implications of what lies before them requiring a choice of how to deal with it, and the openness of the heart to feel what unfolds in life.

Life is best with a ‘balance of thought and emotion’. Blocking the positive experience of emotions is symptomatic of not having dealt with prior issues and obstacles from an earlier time in life. Attaining an inner self love allows one to deal with all types of situations that give rise to emotions from ‘tragic loses’, character affronts, mind created dilemmas, etc. Whether grief, anger, elation, sadness, happiness, anxiety, fear, love on and on, a clear, and open mind and heart ‘responds’ rather than reacts.

Emotions that burn into negativity cause illnesses, disabilities, non compassion, hatreds, distrust, and just wrong judgments. On the flip side, emotions are a ‘gateway to a greater love and compassion for the self, and all of life. Emotions can be hurtful, but in every hurt there are positive messages. Love from the depths of the heart remembers for the road ahead filled with the unknown that will often need a healthy loving response. Be the watcher of emotions. Love is everywhere, why be blind to seeing and feeling it!

For your bone health

For your bone health

As a person grows old, there are constant changes that happen to our bones. Sometimes we lose a certain amount of bones, making it thinner, more fragile and breakable. Although this can be repaired and reinforced by the proper intake of nutrients, some people fail to realize this and eventually find themselves experiencing bone-related conditions as they grow old, as well as at young ages in some cases.

The bones are a very vital part of the human structure, and there are nutrients that the bones just cannot live without. These nutrients help the bones to become healthier, stronger and disease-free.

  • Calcium

Calcium is particularly the most important nutrient that the human bones need. It is the most abundant mineral in the body and plays a vital role in preventing a condition called osteoporosis, or loss of bone density often causing frequent back pains and fracture in the vertebrae, since it helps in keeping the bones and teeth strong. 99% of the calcium is found in the bones, while 1% is found in the blood which helps in certain metabolic processes. The body cannot provide calcium for itself, therefore it must be replenished daily through the diet with the right amount. Supplementations can also be taken as long as the body does not become deficient in calcium, causing more serious problems.

  • Vitamin D

Vitamin D is another fat soluble vitamin that is essential for bone health. Unlike calcium, a precursor of Vitamin D can be found in our body which can later be converted into active Vitamin D through exposure to sunlight our through the diet. According to recent studies, amounts of Vitamin D can become inadequate even in some areas with a lot of sunshine like Australia. During these cases, it is important to acquire enough vitamin D through the diet. It also increases the absorption of calcium in foods, providing more calcium for the bones.

  • Protein

Protein is needed for the formation of hormones needed for bone formation. Not only that, the bone is composed of 20% of protein. Protein is not only beneficial for bone development, but as well as the organs and body systems. As to the amount of protein that should be taken in order to achieve its full effect, all you need is just the right amount. Not too much, and not too less. Low protein level is often associated with hip fracture and other bone diseases such as hyperparathyroidism. Higher protein status results to reduced complications after hip fracture and shorter hospital stays. On the other hand, excessive protein, particularly animal protein, is toxic to the bones. All in all, just the right amount of protein is needed for bone renewal and maintenance. There are many sources of protein-rich foods like cowpeas, raw and fresh egg whites, cheeses, dried seaweed, raw pumpkin leaves, nuts and seeds, and tofu.

  • Magnesium

Almost 60 percent of the dietary magnesium is located and stored in the bones, and the muscles and tissues have the rest. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is essential to good health. It serves as a key function in many biochemical reactions necessary for bone strength and metabolism. Magnesium also helps in active calcium transport in the body and contributes to stopping bone fractures. A study even suggests that women with osteoporosis are reported to be lacking in magnesium, even if they have adequate amount of calcium. Magnesium rich foods include beans, nuts, vegetables, parmesan cheese, cocoa powder, dried figs, wheat germ, dried apricots and many more.

  • Potassium

This mineral is of great importance to the human body. Potassium is considered the hidden bone guardian because it is widely known to maintain critical fluid balance in the body together with sodium, but its benefits for the bones must not be overlooked. The body somehow develops bone-depleting metabolic acids and these acids “eat away” the bone, much like how and acid rain eats up a limestone statue. These acids are somehow largely neutralized by the potassium compounds or potassium salts. Some of the foods that are rich in potassium are raisins, baked potatoes, tomato products, yogurt, lima beans, dried prunes and cooked spinach.

  • Vitamin K

Another vitamin that plays a vital role in bone health is Vitamin K. It gives plays an important role in the absorption of calcium and an indirect role in osteoporosis by preventing bone loss. 65 to 80 micrograms is the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for this mineral which can be mostly found in soybean oil, broccoli, cooked spinach, green leafy vegetables, alfalfa, and fish oil.

  • Vitamin B12

According to a recent study at Tufts University, vitamin B12 can help in avoiding bone fracture. In more than 2,500 people in where the researchers measured their bone density and vitamin B12 levels, it was determined that the bones of people with higher blood level of the vitamin are seven percent denser than those with low levels. Study author Dr. Katherine Tucker says that Vitamin B12 is crucial for the development of new generation cells. She added that the bone is constantly breaking down and rebuilding and without sufficient Vitamin B12, this balance may tip towards greater breakdown. Vitamin B12 rich foods include sardines, liver, eggs, beef, mussels, pork, cheese and milk. However, elderly, vegetarians, pregnant women, smokers, drinkers, and those with intestinal disease may resort to supplementation.

BRIGHTEN YOUR LOVE LIFE

Love is supposed to bring sunshine and happiness into one’s life. If your love life is not brightening up your mood and is, it seems, filling you up with a huge amount of grief instead, then it’s time for de-toxifying your relationship. Here are five simple tips to help you clean up the mess in your love life.

Start talking

Negativities don’t emerge in a single day. They generally build up over a long period of time. If your relationship is plagued with bad vibes today, it’s because you never bothered to sort out the mess before. So talk with your partner about issues that are draining away the fun and happiness from your life. Tell your partner what you feel about them and what this relationship means to you. Tell him/her about things you like and you detest. Spend time just talking and bonding with each other. The immediate benefits of effective communication will surely leave you surprised.

Change your habits

Adjusting a little as per your partner’s needs is a must to make any relationship work. If she dislikes your habit of coming late every time or flirting with other women in front of her, you might as well change these to let peace prevail in your life. It’s really not much of a price for a happy relationship, so go for it.

Accept the issues

Look for mutually acceptable solutions. She is not giving you enough space, or you, in your turn, are getting too curious or possessive about her... Well, whatever the issues may be, you need to accept them as real and arrive at solutions to solve the problem. Do it now before the bond gets severed beyond repair.

Respect emotions

It’s very important to have a partner who respects you for what you are, who trusts you and knows how to read between the lines. This may, of course, take some time to master and for a good and healthy relationship to come about, but you can begin by not passing rude comments about their beliefs, looks and mannerisms.

Go on a holiday

Sometimes boredom kills all the excitement that is necessary to keep a relationship alive and kicking. This lack of excitement that gives way to negativity is a sure shot killer. So infuse some passion and excitement in your relationship by taking a quick romantic break. A weekend holiday is the best option, keeping hectic schedules in mind.

Secret of my longevity

Secret of my longevity

Coming on to 98 years and still earning more than I did in my younger days, people ask me how I manage to do it. They regard me as an expert on longevity. I have pronounced on the subject before: I will repeat it with suitable amendments based on my experiences in the past two years.Earlier I had written that longevity is in one’s genes: children of long-living parents are likely to live longer than those born of short-lived parents. This did not happen in my own family. My parents who died at 90 and 94 had five children, four sons and a daughter. The first to go was the youngest of the siblings. Next went my sister who was the fourth. My elder brother who was three years older than me went a couple of years ago. Two of us remain. I, who will soon be 98, and my younger brother, a retired Brigadier three years younger than me and in much better health. He looks after our ancestral property. Nevertheless, I still believe gene is the most important factor in determining one’s life-span.Devise ways

More important than analysing longevity is to cope with old age and make terms with it. As we grow older, we are less able to exercise our limbs. We have to devise ways to keep them active. Right into my middle eighties, I played tennis every morning, did the rounds of Lodhi gardens in winter and spent an hour in the swimming pool in summer. I am unable to do this any more. The best way to overcome this handicap is regular massages. I have tried different kinds of massages and was disappointed with the oil drip and smearing of oil on the body. A good massage needs powerful hands going all over one’s body from the skull to the toes. I have this done at least once a day or at times twice a day. I am convinced that this has kept me going for so long. Equally important is the need to cut down drastically one’s intake of food and drink. I start my mornings with a glass of guava juice. It is tastier and more health-giving than orange or any other fruit juice. My breakfast is one scrambled egg on toast. My lunch is usually patli kichri with dahi or a vegetable. I skip afternoon tea. In the evening I take a peg of Single Malt Whisky. It gives me a false appetite! Before I eat my supper, I say to myself “don’t eat too much”. I also believe that a meal should have just one kind of vegetable or meat followed by a pinch of chooran. It is best to eat alone and in silence. Talking while eating does not do justice to the food and you swallow a lot of it. For me no more Punjabi or Mughlai food. I find south Indian idli, sambar and grated coconut easier to digest and healthier. Never allow yourself to be constipated. The stomach is a storehouse of all kinds of ailments. Our sedantry life tends to make us constipated. Keep your bowels clean by whatever means you can: by lexatives, enemas, glycerine suppositories —whatever Bapu Gandhi fully understood the need to keep bowels clean. Besides, taking an enema every day, he gave enemas to his women admirers. Impose a strict discipline on your daily routine. If necessary, use a stop-watch. I have breakfast exactly at 6.30 am. lunch at noon, drink at 7 pm, supper at 8 pm. Try to develop piece of mind. For this you must have a healthy bank account. Shortage of money can be very demoralising. It does not have to be in crores, but enough for your future needs and possibility of falling ill. Never lose your temper. It takes a heavy toll and jangles one’s nerves. Never tell a lie. Always keep your national motto in mind: Satyamev Jayate - only truth triumphs. Give away generously. Remember you cannot take it with you. You may give it to your children, your servants or in charity. You will feel better. There is joy in giving. Drive out envy of those who have done better than you in life. A Punjabi verse sums up: Rookhi sookhy khai kay Thanda paani pee Na veykh paraayee chonparian Na tarsaain jee (Eat dry bread and drink cold water Pay no heed or envy those who smear their chapatis with ghee.) Do not conform to the tradition of old people spending time in prayer and long hours in places of worship. That amounts to conceding defeat. Instead take up a hobby like gardening, growing bonsai, helping children of your neighbourhood with their homework. A practice which I have found very effective is to fix my gaze on the flame of candle, empty my mind of everything, but in my kind repeat Aum Shanti, Aum Shanti, Aum Shanti. It does work. I am at peace with the world. We can’t all be Fawja Singh who as 100 runs a marathon race, but we can equal him in longevity, creativity. I wish all my readers long, healthy lives full of happiness.

ANATOMY OF THE KNEE

www.DilSeDesi.orgwww.DilSeDesi.org
Let's begin with the basics of knee anatomy. The knee joint is made up of three bones and a variety of ligaments. The knee is formed by the femur (the thigh bone), the tibia (the shin bone), and the patella (the kneecap). Several muscles and ligaments control the motion of the knee and protect it from damage at the same time. Two ligaments on either side of the knee, called the medial and lateral collateral ligaments, stabilize the knee from side-to-side.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of a pair of ligaments in the www.DilSeDesi.orgcenter of the knee joint that form a cross, and this is where the name "cruciate" comes from. There is both an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). Both of these ligaments function to stabilize the knee from front-to-back during normal and athletic activities. The ligaments of the knee make sure that the weight that is transmitted through the knee joint is centered within the joint minimizing the amount of wear and tear on the cartilage inside the knee.
The weight-bearing surfaces of your knees are covered with a layer of cartilage (referred to by doctors as"articular cartilage"). There are also two shock absorbers in your knee on either side of the joint between the cartilage surfaces of the femur and the tibia. www.DilSeDesi.orgThese two structures are called the medial meniscus and the lateral meniscus. The menisci are horseshoe-shaped shock absorbers that help to both center the knee joint during activity and to minimize the amount of stress on the articular cartilage. The combination of the menisci and the surface cartilage in your knee produces a nearly frictionless gliding surface. The knee is an incredible joint. It is strong, flexible, and very tough.

Movement of the knee

The main muscles that move the knee joint are the quadricep and hamstring muscles. The quadriceps attaches to the patella, and the patellar tendon connects this muscle to the front of the tibia. When the quadricep muscles contract the knee extends. In contrast, when the hamstring muscles contract, they pull the knee into flexion.

The Empty Soap Box

The Empty Soap Box

One of the most memorable case studies on Japanese management was the case of the empty soap box, which happened in one of Japan's biggest cosmetics companies. The company received a complaint that a consumer had bought a soap box that was empty.

Immediately the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery department. For some reason, one soap box went through the assembly line empty.

Management asked its engineers to solve the problem. Post-haste, the engineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with high- resolution monitors manned by two people to watch all the soap boxes that passed through the line to make sure they were not empty.

No doubt, they worked hard and they worked fast but they spent whoopee amount to do so. But when a workman was posed with the same problem, did not get into complications of X-rays, etc but instead came out with another solution.

He bought a strong industrial electric fan and pointed it at the assembly line. He switched the fan on, and as each soap box passed the fan, it simply blew the empty boxes out of the line.

Moral of the story: Always look for simple solutions. Devise the simplest possible solution that solves the problem. So, learn to focus on solutions not on problems. "If you look at what you do not have in life, you don't have anything; if you look at what you have in life, you have everything.
